Classic Doctor Who- Genesis of the Daleks

Ok I have to admit I started this episode and had to restart it.  Let me preface this post by saying one it may contain Spoilers Sweetie and two I have not seen many Classic Who episodes. Keep in mind if you attended the recent Doctor Who in the theaters and saw the interview with Will Wheaton then you know that Peter indicated that we should brush up on our Dalek history. I am not sure where in the history of the Dalek's this episode/movie falls.

I have to say that I love the opening credits of all Doctor Who. There is just something about them that I like and I try to record any new ones when I see them. I currently love 12's opening credits but have to admit for the time that this was running the credits are not bad at all.

For an episode summary you can go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genesis_of_the_Daleks

I am interested in this episode for many reasons. The history of the Dalek's and Sarah Jane. I just recently finished watching the episode with Tenant where Sarah Jane came back with K-9. Those are the biggest two.

I was also interested to see if Davros looked the same. Let's face it while this show may have been ahead of it's time it was still limited to the old school technology and filmography. Things that were ahead then are not today for obvious reasons.

I have to say the opening was interesting for someone that didn't see any of the Classic Who prior to this episode. I was not sure if the dude in the black that they opened with was another Time Lord because the series that I am familiar with they are all dead but the Doctor and apparently the Master. That is another story line that I would like to learn more about or watch but that is another story.

I also find it interesting that in this one they are talking about the environment like they are scientists. That is not something that you seen in the current episodes. Based on the Season 9 premier I thought that the Planet of Skaro would look the same but apparently not. I guess that is me being naive.

You can tell while watching the episode that no matter how long after WWII this was shown you still see hints of Hitler's influence/fear in the episodes. They needed a way to indicate or portray that Daleks were evil and the most evil that was known at that time was of course Hitler and his followers.

It is interesting to see that Darvos hasn't changed much in his appearance. The Daleks while they may have changed slightly they are still in the same style just modernized. I wonder why the word Exterminate. You hear Darvos speak it but it is never explained why that word.

It is interesting how from the get go when the Dalek has self control turned on the first person it goes to attack is the Doctor.

I can also see why some have Baker as their Doctor. He is a good actor and I do like the scarf. I do not like the pants but then again that maybe flashbacks to a time I was born. I was never impressed with the fashion from the 60's or the 70's.

I have to say as the episode/movie goes on I find it harder to focus and pay attention. I have to ask how does he not fall on his scarf??? The other question becomes if they exeterminated Darvos how does he come back ?

Your Doctor?

While I am building this page up and getting things setup let's start off with your doctor.

When I first started watching Doctor Who and even talking with people about Who the same thing kept coming up? Who is your Doctor? After more and more conversations I found that they meant who was your favorite and for many their favorite was the first Doctor they saw.

I can't say the same. For me I got into Doctor Who because one Friday night I was cleaning out my DVR and there was a Doctor Who Episode that was recorded. The first episode I have seen was the Beast Below and then Time of the Angels. So technically Matt Smith or Doctor # 11 was my first Doctor and should be my favorite. But he is not. Don't get me wrong I like Matt Smith and the way he portrays the Doctor.

I was immediately hooked and got on Netflix and started watching from Season 1 (Doctor 9). I liked Christopher Eccelson and how he portrayed the Doctor and to be honest I wish there was more episodes with him. But he is still not my favorite Doctor.

I am going to skip around a bit. The War Doctor (John Hurt) was an interesting Doctor. I have to say I was enthralled by him. It is funny how he was in 3 episodes and all three explained his character in full and no one has wanted to see more of him. I do think that even though it was explained there could be some episodes with him in it. Something where it is a flashback or something along those lines. Or even a sub series/movie that shows stories of the War Doctor.

So we have covered 9, War Doctor, and 11. That leaves two 10 and 12.

Doctor #12 (Peter Capaldi) I was a little uninterested in at first. Last season (Season 8) I have to say while I liked it I had a hard time following the Doctor. Not the storyline but the actor. It just seemed odd to me and something off. I will say it could be because he was getting his feet under him and getting use to the flow of the show and making it his. So far this season (Season 9) I am more loyal to him than I have been since he came on. But he is still not my favorite.

So that leaves Tenant. Yes he is my favorite. Not my first doctor, he was actually the third and yet my favorite. I love how Tenant portrayed the Doctor and how much fun he brought into it. I love him and the interaction with Rose. I like the other companions but Rose has to be my favorite of them all. I don't know why and could never speak to it in a conversation she just is. It is one of those things that there is no explanation for.

So Doctor 10 or David Tenant is my favorite Doctor and Rose is my favorite Companion. Clara and Martha tied for Second and Amy and Donna tied for third.

Who is your favorite Doctor? Sound off in the comments!

Welcome to my blog!

Welcome!

Let me start this by prefacing I am a Whovian but I came into this late in life. I started watching Doctor Who around Season 7. I have gone back and seen all the new Who and slowly working to see the Classic Who.

The purpose of this site is to do a summary of the epsiodes/seasons as I watch them and to have a place to discuss the Doctor with others. This includes SPOILERS, fan fiction and thoughts on how we think or would like the show to go ahead. This is not a place to pass judgement but to help others understand the show and culture.

Episodes will not be in order at first! I will try to hashtag them based on their season and episode.
